Uninsured drivers could push up debt for honest motorists

Written by Amelia Gordon on March 11, 2012 – 12:51 pm

Honest motorists who are already struggling with debt may find matters being made worse by those illegally driving without cover.

A study by MoneySupermarket.com has revealed 16 per cent of British motorists have driven a car without insurance, which includes six per cent doing so by driving someone elses car that they were not covered for and eight per cent doing so in their own vehicle.

The site noted that the effect of people driving uninsured is to add £30 more to every annual policy.

Higher motoring costs may be making it harder for those who drive and owe money to get debt free, as they have less cash to spare to pay off their loans and cards due to the expense of getting behind the wheel.

On Saturday (March 10th) insurer Axa published research indicating that one in every three motorists is unable to afford the excess on their car insurance policy.
